All Steam Ahead: Battery-Powered Trains in Liverpool Set to Begin Operations at Headbolt Lane Station

4th October 2023

Liverpool City Region has declared that Headbolt Lane station is set to open on October 5th, becoming the first station in the UK to be served by battery-powered passenger trains.

The £80 million fully accessible station will serve as the new terminus for the Kirkby branch of the Northern Line on the Merseyrail network. Additionally, it will be the last stop for Northern’s services travelling between Manchester, Wigan, and Kirkby.

The new station, along with the publicly-owned trains in the region, are integral elements of the Mayor’s vision to establish a locally managed transport network similar to London’s. This initiative seeks to provide faster, more affordable, environmentally friendly, and dependable services throughout the Liverpool region.
