HS2 Ltd and Sellafield recognised for diversity and inclusion work

21st February 2024

HS2 Ltd and Sellafield Ltd have been recognised for their respective work to improve equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace.

HS2 Ltd announced it is removing all personal details from the first stage of its recruitment process. It said that included names, age, gender, ethnicity and personal images.

Personal details would only be revealed to hiring managers if candidates were invited to attend interviews.

The new step taken to screen applications “without bias” follows the High Speed 2 (HS2) developer’s accreditation with The Clear Assured Platinum Standard for “exceptional commitment” to EDI. The standard was awarded by independent assessors The Clear Company two years ago and was re-awarded recently following a biennial assessment period.

HS2 Ltd senior resourcing manager Elena Argirova said: “This change in working practice gives candidates complete confidence that at HS2 Ltd, recruitment and selection is based purely on talent and nothing else.”

Argirova said HS2 Ltd was “proud of the inclusive workplace culture” which the company had “worked so hard to create” and hoped it sent “a clear message to prospective candidates that equality matters at HS2”.

HS2 Ltd said the change was announced on 8 February “in celebration of Race Equality Week”.

Meanwhile, Sellafield Ltd announced, also on 8 February, that its Programme and Project Partners (PPP) joint venture decommissioning group earned recognition for its work on inclusion at the Government Project Delivery awards.

PPP features Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Kellogg Brown and Root (KBR), Jacobs, and Altrad Babcock.

The awards were led by the Infrastructure Projects Authority.

Judges praised PPP for the work it had done “to embed fairness, respect, equality, diversity, inclusion and engagement across the partnership and for becoming the first in nuclear accredited by the National Centre for Diversity”.

PPP managing director Duncan Elliott said: “As a partnership made up of four large organisations along with our colleagues at Sellafield Ltd, creating an inclusive place to work is one of the most important things we can do to ensure everyone can perform at their best, while delivering some of the most complex infrastructure projects in the country.

Elliott said he was “absolutely delighted” that the government had given PPP the recognition and thanked everyone involved in the achievement.
