This week marked a remarkable event—the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Royal Navy’s service in the East Midlands. Held at the prestigious Nottingham Council House, the evening was a moving tribute to the dedication, resilience, and invaluable contributions of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Reservists from this region.
The atmosphere was electrifying – the gathering was a blend of naval officers, reservists, veterans, community leaders, and the proud families of those who serve. It was a humbling experience to stand among individuals who have played crucial roles in protecting and serving our nation.
The evening began with an address by the Commanding Officer of HMS Sherwood, who highlighted the 75-year journey of the Royal Navy in the East Midlands. It was inspiring to hear about the contributions of our naval personnel, from supporting operations in the Gulf War to assisting during the COVID-19 pandemic and now preparing for the 2025 Carrier Strike Group deployment.
One of the most spectacular moments of the evening was the stirring performances by the Dementia Choir and the Royal Marines Band. Their musical excellence and discipline left the audience in awe. The precision, rhythm, and sheer energy of their performance were a testament to the strength and unity of the Royal Navy community.
Throughout the night, conversations with sailors and their families shed light on the unwavering commitment and sacrifices made by these individuals. It was heartwarming to hear stories of resilience, adventure, and camaraderie that come with a life in service. Employers and community leaders also expressed their deep appreciation for the reservists who balance their civilian careers with their dedication to the Navy.
The event was not just about reflecting on the past but also looking forward to the future. With the upcoming 2025 Carrier Strike Group deployment, it is clear that the East Midlands naval community will continue to play an essential role in shaping global security.
As the evening drew to a close, I left the Nottingham Council House feeling incredibly proud of our naval personnel and the enduring legacy of HMS Sherwood, the East Midlands University Royal Naval Unit, and the Royal Marines Reserves. The event was a powerful reminder of the impact and dedication of those who serve our nation at sea and beyond.
