Acres Engineering Opens Doors to Inspire the Next Generation on National Manufacturing Day

12th November 2024

On Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day, Acres Engineering opened its doors once again, providing young minds with an unparalleled opportunity to witness the world of manufacturing in action. This marks the third time Acres has participated in the event, and the enthusiasm and engagement from the nearly 200 students who visited the facility demonstrate the growing impact of initiatives that celebrate and support UK manufacturing.

Acres Engineering, known for its dedication to fostering STEM education, offered students a comprehensive, interactive experience that showcased the end-to-end manufacturing process. With guidance from Acres’ skilled team, the students walked through each stage of production, from initial design and prototyping to precision engineering and quality control. This journey was capped off with a unique, hands-on project: students were able to manufacture their own night light, a keepsake that both symbolises the illuminating power of knowledge and serves as a reminder of the day’s learning. This project not only offered students insight into the technical aspects of manufacturing but also sparked a sense of pride and accomplishment as they took home a product they helped create.

Acres Engineering’s participation in National Manufacturing Day highlights its ongoing commitment to community engagement and to encouraging youth interest in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The presence of STEM teams from industry leaders Toyota Manufacturing UK and Rolls-Royce added an exciting dimension to the event. Their involvement emphasised the significance of collaborative efforts between educational institutions and leading companies in the UK, underscoring how these partnerships are crucial for building a thriving, innovative future for the manufacturing sector.

The event was further elevated by visits from several esteemed guests. His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Mrs. Elizabeth Fothergill CBE, made an appearance, lending a note of distinction to the day. Mrs. Fothergill’s visit underscored the importance of initiatives like National Manufacturing Day in reinforcing the UK’s manufacturing legacy and inspiring young people to consider careers in this vital industry. Joining her was Samantha Niblett, MP for Derbyshire South, whose presence highlighted the support and recognition from government representatives for the development of STEM education and manufacturing careers in the UK. Their visits offered students an invaluable opportunity to hear firsthand about the role of manufacturing in the national economy and the critical part it plays in job creation and technological innovation.

The day began on an exciting note with a visit from BBC Radio Derby, who came to capture the spirit of the event and share the inspiring atmosphere with their audience. The media presence served as a reminder of the broader community’s interest in and support for initiatives that connect students with potential career pathways in the UK manufacturing sector. Coverage by BBC Radio Derby allowed listeners across the region to get a sense of the day’s activities, further spreading awareness of National Manufacturing Day’s impact.

Reflecting on the day’s success, Acres Engineering’s Managing Director shared, “It’s an honour to open our facility to young people and provide them with a firsthand look at what a career in engineering could look like. National Manufacturing Day gives us a chance to demystify manufacturing, helping students see the exciting possibilities within the STEM field. We are proud to support National Manufacturing Day, and we look forward to continuing to inspire future generations through events like this.”

For Acres Engineering, National Manufacturing Day isn’t just an open day; it’s an investment in the future. The success of this year’s event speaks volumes about the value of direct, hands-on learning experiences for students. By showing them the intricacies of the manufacturing process and allowing them to create a tangible product, Acres Engineering helped these young visitors grasp the potential of a career in engineering and manufacturing.

The students, many of whom were visiting a manufacturing facility for the first time, walked away with a newfound respect for the industry and the people who power it. By bridging the gap between education and industry, Acres Engineering is fostering a generation of future engineers, innovators, and problem-solvers who will carry forward the UK’s proud manufacturing legacy.

As Acres Engineering looks to the future, their ongoing commitment to events like National Manufacturing Day highlights their dedication to making a meaningful impact on both their community and the manufacturing industry at large. Through engaging young minds, they are not only inspiring future engineers but also ensuring that the future of UK manufacturing is bright, dynamic, and in the hands of a skilled, passionate workforce.
