Bank of England visit Acres to discuss the current state of British Manufacturing

For those unfamiliar with Megan’s role, she is one of the nine members of the MPC responsible for setting UK interest rates and helping shape monetary policy. The decisions made by the MPC influence everything from inflation and borrowing costs to business investment and consumer spending across the country.

The visit provided an opportunity to showcase modern British manufacturing and discuss how current economic conditions are impacting engineering SMEs operating at the heart of the UK’s industrial supply chains.

One of the key messages we shared was that British manufacturing remains resilient, capable and ambitious.

In many ways, British manufacturing feels like a car sitting on the starting grid, engine running and ready to accelerate. The capability is there. The skills are there. The ambition is there. What many businesses are waiting for is the confidence and demand needed to unlock the next wave of investment and growth.

During a tour of our Derbyshire facility, we shared how Acres supports customers across aerospace, defence, energy, rail and automotive sectors through the design and manufacture of bespoke production support equipment, engineered fabrications and productivity-improving solutions.

 

Our discussion focused on a range of issues affecting manufacturers today, including order book visibility, customer confidence, investment decisions, skills and labour availability, wage pressures, material costs and the challenges of maintaining competitiveness in an increasingly uncertain economic environment.

We also explored how many of the projects supported by businesses such as Acres, productivity improvements, factory upgrades, automation, material handling solutions and production support equipment, are often among the first investments to be delayed when uncertainty increases, despite their long-term benefits to productivity and competitiveness.

As a business that works closely with many of the UK’s leading manufacturers, we were pleased to provide a real-world perspective on how economic conditions are influencing investment behaviour, productivity projects and growth decisions across industry.
