With a packed agenda the Make UK Defence events are always filled with fantastic insight and opportunities. Acres had the ability to highlight its capabilities to all of the manufacturers in the room looking to improve their capacity, quality, safety and productivity.

Nick Truman our Business Development and Account Manager attended the event on the 21/5/24 which took place at Seco Tools in Redditch. Seco Tools are one of the world’s largest providers of comprehensive metal cutting solutions for milling, stationary tools, hole making and tooling systems. Dave Magall the Innovation Partnership Manager who has over 30 years background in Aerospace engineering did the introduction to the company and how they are finding the market at the moment.

The session was then taken by Andrew Kinniburgh the Director General of Make UK Defence. Of which Nick had the pleasure to speak to him and discuss the current climate and the potential opportunities that Acres currently have with their customers within the Defence sector. Andrew gave a quick summary about the Defence sector landscape, the opportunities and challenges with so much going on within the sector at present. There was also more detailed analysis of AUKUS and military spending as a whole.

One of the main discussions of the day was the Fit for Defence scheme that Make UK do to assist members to succeed in the defence sector. Overviews that were given were on cyber security, marketing, sustainability, and productivity.

Phil Blunden from the UK Ministry of Defence Cyber Engagement Team provided a review of the Cyber Security Model and the necessary steps all SME’s should take. This included the cyber security model process, risk assessment evaluation and potential cyber implementation plans. Cyber security is a subject that Acres takes very seriously and has held cyber security certification since pre 2020.

Jenny Bridge was next who did a review of the current status of Boeing Defence. It included an overview of what they are getting involved in and the portal and opportunities where SME’s can access information for any upcoming projects with them.

Lastly George Guthrie from Electranet went through a very detailed review of how their company can help others in the vetting process when working within the government.

Overall, it was a great experience, great site and great overview of the UK defence market as a whole. We are proud to be members of Make UK and already work with several members.
