Drinks Reception with Keir Starmer MP and Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP
Representatives from Acres had the opportunity to meet Keir Starmer MP, Leader of the Labour Party, and Rachel Reeves MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer at a Regional Business Leaders’ Reception in Nottingham.
The event, which was described as an informal and intimate drinks reception and networking opportunity provided a good opportunity for meeting new businesses from the area. Acres were luckily enough to meet a number of the fantastic businesses represented in the room.
Unfortunately, there wasn’t a Q&A opportunity to gain an understanding of how Keir plans to achieve his aims, or to challenge some of the policies mentioned. At the event Keir did highlight several key points relevant to his vision and Labour’s policies:
- Economic Growth and Building Initiatives: Starmer emphasised the importance of economic growth and the necessity to build more homes to tackle the housing crisis. He talked about cutting through bureaucratic red tape and making effective use of “grey belt” lands like disused carparks to build new homes.
- Devolution and Local Empowerment: A significant focus of his speech was on devolving powers to towns and cities, allowing them to manage their resources and address local issues directly, similar to the powers enjoyed by major cities like London and Manchester.
- Distance from Previous Labour Leadership: Starmer made it clear that he intends to move away from the era of Jeremy Corbyn, focusing instead on practical politics over gesture politics.
- Five Key Missions for Labour: Starmer also reiterated Labour’s five missions which include achieving the highest sustained economic growth in the G7, making Britain a clean energy superpower, reforming the NHS, ensuring public safety, and breaking down barriers to opportunity for children through reforms in childcare and education.
- Focus on Skills and Education: He spoke about modernising the UK’s educational curriculum to better prepare children for the future, emphasising the need for skills that are essential in today’s digital and global economy, such as creativity, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
These points reflect Starmer’s focus on growth, modernisation, and pragmatic politics, positioning Labour as a party ready to tackle current and future challenges with a clear, focused strategy.
