Emergency 1st aid training with Simon Robinson
As part of our ongoing investment in staff and continuous improvement, this week several members of our production staff took an FAA Level 3 Emergency First Aid at Work course with Simon Robinson from Little Acorns Forest Schools
This FAW course covered all aspects of basic life support including CPR, bleeding, unconsciousness, choking, head injuries, sprains and strains and a vast range of first aid conditions that you may experience in the workplace.
Why is 1st aid training important in our business?
1. High-Risk Nature of the Work
Engineering Hazards
Engineering environments involve heavy machinery, high-pressure systems, and complex electrical installations. These create multiple opportunities for injury, ranging from minor cuts to life-threatening trauma.
Welding-Specific Risks
Welding poses additional risks:
-
Burns from hot metal and sparks
-
Electric shock from welding equipment
-
Eye damage from arc rays (welder’s flash)
-
Inhalation of toxic fumes
Immediate first aid response can significantly reduce the severity of these injuries.
2. Saving Lives and Reducing Severity
The first few minutes after an accident are critical:
-
Trained individuals can provide life-saving interventions such as CPR, bleeding control, and treatment for shock.
-
Quick first aid can prevent complications and promote faster recovery.
-
Reduces the chance of permanent disability or fatality.
3. Compliance and Legal Responsibility
Workplace Regulations
In most countries, health and safety regulations (such as HSE in the UK or OSHA in the USA) mandate:
-
First aid training for designated personnel
-
Accessible first aid kits and equipment
Failure to comply can lead to serious legal and financial consequences for the business.
4. Boosting Workplace Safety Culture
Preparedness and Confidence
-
Employees feel safer knowing their colleagues are trained to respond in emergencies.
-
Encourages reporting of near-misses and hazards before they escalate into incidents.
Reduction in Downtime
Effective first aid prevents minor injuries from becoming major medical emergencies, minimizing production disruptions.
5. Enhancing Team Morale and Responsibility
First aid training:
-
Empowers employees with valuable life skills.
-
Encourages teamwork and shared responsibility for health and safety.
-
Fosters a caring and proactive workplace culture.
