Nigel Vardy, better known as ‘Mr Frostbite’ visits Acres

13th October 2026

This week, Acres Engineering Ltd had the pleasure of welcoming Nigel Vardy, better known as ‘Mr Frostbite’, to our manufacturing facility in Melbourne, Derbyshire.

Nigel is a remarkable individual whose extraordinary experiences as a mountaineer, adventurer, author and motivational speaker have inspired audiences across the world. However, what makes his story particularly interesting to us at Acres is that, alongside his adventures, Nigel has enjoyed a successful career spanning more than 35 years in electrical and control engineering.

Born and raised in Derbyshire, Nigel began his engineering career as an apprentice at the age of 16, developing his technical expertise while pursuing his passion for exploration and the great outdoors.

An Extraordinary Story of Survival and Determination
Nigel’s life changed dramatically in 1999 while climbing Denali (formerly Mount McKinley), North America’s highest mountain, in Alaska.
Caught in a ferocious storm at approximately 20,000 feet, Nigel was exposed to extreme temperatures, suffering devastating frostbite injuries. Following his rescue, he underwent extensive surgery, losing all his toes, parts of his fingers and his nose.
At just 30 years old, Nigel faced the enormous challenge of rebuilding his life, including relearning everyday activities such as walking, writing and driving.
For many, such an experience would have marked the end of their mountaineering ambitions. For Nigel, however, it became another challenge to overcome.
Demonstrating extraordinary resilience and determination, he returned to climbing and subsequently completed expeditions across some of the world’s most challenging environments.
His achievements include becoming the first British mountaineer to climb the highest peaks on the world’s seven largest islands, an extraordinary accomplishment known as the Seven Peaks, Seven Islands challenge.
Today, Nigel shares his experiences through motivational speaking, educational engagements and his published books, inspiring others to overcome adversity, challenge perceived limitations and pursue their ambitions.

A Shared Passion for Engineering
During his visit to Acres Engineering, Nigel was given a tour of our manufacturing facility, where we had the opportunity to demonstrate our engineering and manufacturing capabilities.
It was particularly enjoyable to hear about Nigel’s professional background in engineering, including his experiences working in the electrical and utilities industries, and to discuss the similarities between the challenges faced in engineering and those encountered during his expeditions.
Both disciplines demand careful planning, technical understanding, problem-solving and the ability to adapt when circumstances change.
Nigel’s experiences provide a fascinating perspective on these qualities, particularly the importance of determination, resilience and decision-making when faced with unexpected challenges.

Inspiring the Next Generation
At Acres Engineering, we are passionate about promoting engineering, developing skills and creating opportunities for the next generation.
Nigel shares this commitment through his extensive work with schools, young people and educational organisations, encouraging individuals to broaden their horizons and recognise their potential.
His journey from a Derbyshire engineering apprentice to an internationally recognised mountaineer is a wonderful example of how a technical career can provide the foundations for an extraordinary life.
As a business committed to apprenticeships, education and promoting opportunity, we particularly value the importance of sharing stories such as Nigel’s.

Thank You, Nigel!

Luke Parker, Managing Director of Acres Engineering Ltd, commented:
“It was a real pleasure to welcome Nigel to Acres this week. He is a truly inspirational character, and it was an honour to show him around our facility and hear about some of his remarkable adventures.
What I found particularly interesting was Nigel’s background in engineering. We enjoyed discussing his experiences in the industry alongside the extraordinary challenges he has overcome during his mountaineering career.
His story is a fantastic example of resilience, determination and what can be achieved when you refuse to allow adversity to define your future.
Thank you for taking the time to visit us, Nigel. It was a privilege to meet you, and we look forward to keeping in touch.”
