Strengthening Defence Engagement – Acres Engineering Welcomes Senior Army Visitors
It was a real pleasure to host Colonel J Heardman and Lieutenant Colonel K E Spiers OBE from the Army’s HQ Centre at Acres Engineering today for a wide-ranging discussion covering everything from cadet engagement and drone activities to engineering support for the MOD.
During a factory tour, our guests had the opportunity to meet and speak with several of our apprentices, who proudly described the engineering processes they were working on — from fabrication and precision machining to electrical assembly and testing. It was a fantastic chance for the apprentices to share their experiences and for our visitors to see first-hand how Acres develops its next generation of engineers through hands-on learning and mentorship.
In the assembly shop, the group examined one of our impressive live projects — a custom PLC-controlled lifting device designed to aid a train manufacturing process. The project showcased the type of innovative, safety-critical engineering that Acres is known for, combining advanced automation, control systems, and mechanical precision to solve complex industrial challenges.
As the UK looks to expand the national cadet network, it’s important for businesses like Acres to recognise and promote the positive influence that cadet experience brings into the workplace. The values instilled through the cadet movement — discipline, timekeeping, professionalism, teamwork, communication, and resilience — align perfectly with the standards expected within modern engineering environments. Many of our own apprentices and young engineers have benefited greatly from their cadet backgrounds, bringing a sense of purpose and leadership that enhances the wider team.
