Supporting Future Engineers: Acres Engineering Helps Ashby Students with Exoskeleton Project
Under expert guidance, Alex and Dan were able to use our TIG welding equipment to complete a key element of their design – a ball socket joint.
At Acres Engineering, we are passionate about supporting the next generation of engineers. Whether it’s through apprenticeships, work experience, or collaboration with local schools, we are always eager to help young people access real-world engineering opportunities. So when Ashby School reached out to us for support with a student project, we were more than happy to lend a hand.
The project involved two enthusiastic A Level students – Alex and Dan, both aged 18 – who are currently studying Engineering in Ashby School’s Sixth Form. The duo were working on an ambitious and technically advanced piece: an exoskeleton designed to support and assist human movement and lifting. To bring their design to life, they needed specialist help welding a crucial component. That’s where we came in…
We introduced them to our skilled Fabricator, Cam, who gave them a hands-on introduction to TIG welding – short for Tungsten Inert Gas welding. TIG welding is ideal for precision work, offering strong, clean joins. It’s a technique used across a range of advanced industries such as aerospace, motorsport, and high-performance automotive engineering – perfect for a project like this one.
Under expert guidance, Alex and Dan were able to use our TIG welding equipment to complete a key element of their design – a ball socket joint. This piece will be attached to the back of the exoskeleton and plays a vital role in the structure, enabling upper-body mobility and helping support the mechanical arms.
Alex, who is leading the design as part of his course, said:
“It’s great to be able to come to Acres Engineering and use the welding equipment as part of my project. The component is a ball socket which I’m going to join to the back of the skeleton. It’s an important part of the design because it helps the user move and helps to hold the arms up.”
We’re incredibly proud to have played a small part in Alex and Dan’s engineering journey. Supporting young innovators with real-world tools and mentoring not only benefits the students, but also helps strengthen the future of our industry.
Well done to both students – we can’t wait to see how your project develops!
