Baker Hughes to equip Woodside’s Louisiana LNG project

13th January 2025

Energy technology company Baker Hughes will supply key equipment to Woodside Energy Group’s Louisiana LNG development, which is targeting a final investment decision (FID) in Q1 2025.

Received from engineering and construction company Bechtel Energy, the order includes eight main refrigeration compressors driven by LM6000PF+ gas turbines and eight expander compressors.

The equipment will support phase one of the project. Once complete, phase one will have a total capacity of approximately 11 million tonnes per annum of LNG.

Woodside acquired the LNG project as part of its $1.2bn purchase of natural gas firm Tellurian. The project was previously called Driftwood LNG, but Woodside changed the name directly after the transaction.

At full capacity, Louisiana LNG will have three trains with a total capacity of 16.5 million tonnes per annum.

Bechtel has been working on the site since its acquisition and will continue under a revised EPC’s limited notice to proceed. Bechtel will now continue site construction.

Paul Marsden, President of Bechtel Energy, described Louisiana LNG as vital in meeting the world’s increasing LNG demand.

Baker Hughes was also previously selected to supply Woodside electric-powered Integrated Compressor Line (ICL) packages and other turbomachinery equipment for the associated pipeline serving the LNG export terminal.

Ganesh Ramaswamy, Executive Vice-President of Industrial & Energy Technology at Baker Hughes, said the company is committed to providing technology to ensure the LNG industry can meet growing energy demand.

In the past decade, the US LNG export sector has undergone unprecedented growth, according to the US Department of Energy, with the first LNG exports from the lower 48 states commencing in 2016.

To date, the US Department of Energy has authorised 48 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas for export, or nearly half of current domestic production.
