According to a newly released report that coincides with the latest Gaia data release, the United Kingdom’s financial support for scientists engaged in the endeavour to map the Galaxy has played a pivotal role in pushing the boundaries of human understanding.

The UK Space Agency enlisted the services of the space economics and strategy consultancy known Space to examine the consequences of the United Kingdom’s national funding efforts in support of the country’s participation in the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Global Astrometric Interferometer for Astrophysics (Gaia) mission.

Commencing its mission in 2013 and slated for operations until 2025, Gaia has embarked on an ambitious endeavour: the creation of a comprehensive 3D representation comprising positional and velocity data for approximately 2.5 billion celestial bodies, including stars, quasars, exoplanets, comets, and asteroids. The primary objective of this mission is to craft the most extensive and accurate 3D map of the Galaxy ever conceived.
