Network Rail announces £1.5m Edinburgh bridge upgrade

The start of next week will see engineers commence a new £1.5m project to strengthen and futureproof a bridge in the east of Edinburgh, Network Rail has confirmed today.

The structure in question sits on the A1140 Portobello Road at Craigentinny Avenue and over the East Coast Main Line.

The programme of works is set to take three months to complete, with engineers scheduled to conduct:

• masonry repairs;

• parapet extensions; and

• painting.

 

Long-term benefits

“We’ve worked with the City of Edinburgh Council to plan and deliver the work required and have found a way to do this while avoiding the need to close the road completely,” said Network Rail project manager, Magda Rutkowska.

“While we appreciate that disruption to the road network is never ideal, carrying out an extensive programme of repair and maintenance on the structure now will keep it operational for longer without any further significant interventions.”

Network Rail says the extensive initiative will extend the structure’s lifespan while also reducing the need for maintenance work in the future.

The project starts next Monday (26 August) and will include both day and night shifts, as well as two weekends of continuous work – on the 22nd and 23rd of September and the 29th and 30th of September.

Network Rail says this is to allow engineers to complete the more complex elements of the work in a safe and efficient manner.
