Siemens Mobility to Supply Light Rail Vehicles for Cleveland RTA
The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) has selected Siemens Mobility as the preferred vendor to replace its ageing rolling stock.
This announcement initiates the process of awarding a contract to Siemens Mobility for the purchase of 24 Siemens S200 rail cars. This contract will also include the option to purchase up to 60 additional cars in the future.
The new high-floor light rail vehicles will be modelled off a fleet currently used by Calgary Transit in Alberta, Canada.
Each rail car will have 52 passenger seats, four wheelchair areas and two bicycle areas, as well as modern infotainment systems for an improved travel experience.
In addition, the driver’s cab will feature a dedicated HVAC unit and a heated windshield. Ice cutter pantographs will also be installed on every car.
“Siemens looks forward to working with Greater Cleveland RTA and the community in bringing these new rail cars to Cleveland. It’s truly a historic moment.”
The RTA’s rail car replacement project is expected to cost 393 million USD. This investment will cover the new rail cars, infrastructure modifications, railroad connections, engineering, testing, training, field support, spare parts and tooling.
The project is supported by funds from the Federal Transportation Administration (FTA), Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), Northeast Ohio Areawide Coordinating Agency (NOACA) and The Greater Cleveland RTA.
