UK unveil plans to propel smart energy tech and infrastructure

The UK has unveiled new initiatives to propel the development of smart energy technology and infrastructure nationwide.

These initiatives aim to increase the adoption of smart meters and flexible energy tariffs in more residences, alongside providing financial support for enterprises to explore new services powered by IoT.

A significant aspect of the strategy includes enhancing support for in-home displays that link to smart meters. The government has introduced a scheme that allows customers to repair or replace defective displays after the one-year warranty period has expired. Prominent energy suppliers, representing 60% of the market, have joined this scheme, enabling numerous households to monitor their energy consumption accurately.

Furthermore, an examination of default energy agreements is in progress to render them more dynamic. The objective is for standard tariffs to more accurately mirror the lower costs associated with periods of sustainable, low-carbon power production. This initiative aims to promote the use of smart technologies and meters.

The announcement also featured a £10 million fund dedicated to enterprises for trialling innovative tariffs and technologies that leverage IoT connectivity. This includes customised pricing tailored to a household’s typical routine and smart chargers for electric vehicles that utilise inexpensive, off-peak electricity rates.

Amanda Solloway, Minister for Energy Affordability and Skills, stated: “More than half of British homes are already capable of accessing economical off-peak power via a smart meter, yet we can all encounter challenges in finding time to search for favourable energy rates.

“These new initiatives will guarantee that individuals can tap into these savings, even if they are on the standard basic tariff, ensuring that even the busiest families do not miss out on reduced bills.”

Energy UK, an industry group, has praised the initiative, underscoring its potential to afford households greater control over their energy bills while encouraging the adoption of flexible energy consumption. They view it as a move towards a more intelligent grid that optimises renewable energy and distributed energy resources through IoT integration.

Daniel Portis, Deputy Director at Energy UK, remarked: “A smart, adaptable energy system will yield benefits for all customers. Energy suppliers are committing resources and innovating to rise to this challenge with new offerings and services that afford their customers greater control over their bills and capitalise on periods when energy is most affordable.

“Thus, we applaud the Government’s recent package, which could enhance households’ utilisation of smart technology, provide crucial funding for innovation, and initiate an important discussion on ensuring the future energy market serves all customers effectively.”

These developments enhance the UK’s ongoing advancement in smart infrastructure. Over half of British homes are now equipped with a smart meter. Flexible energy deals linked to these meters could potentially save households approximately £900 annually, as per government estimates.

With smart meters and grids being fundamental to the UK’s enduring strategy for clean energy, these new actions signify sustained political support and investment in IoT-driven innovation within the energy sector.
