Removable fan guard

Scope:

We designed and manufactured a removable industrial fan guard for our customer to enhance safety but be quickly removable for maintenance. The guard serves as a critical protective barrier, preventing accidental contact with the moving parts, which significantly reduces the risk of injury to personnel or damage to other equipment.

Additionally, the custom design was tailored to fit the specific dimensions and operational requirements of the customer’s equipment, ensuring optimal airflow without compromising protection, but allowing quick access without the need for special tools should it be required.

We also designed and manufactured a pulley / belt guard for the same customer.

Solution:

Manufacture fan guard from 2mm mild steel with the following features:

• 2 removable D handles,
• 3 x 4 lobe star knob handles,

Functionality, the guard can be quickly removed by removing the star knob handles to allow access for maintenance.
This is a rigid, fixed, fan guard.

Types of Similar Guards that we can make:

1. Machine Guards

• Purpose: Protect operators from moving parts in machinery (gears, belts, pulleys, etc.)

• Types:

  • Fixed Guards – Permanent barriers; simple and effective.

  • Interlocked Guards – Shut off machine power when opened.

  • Adjustable Guards – Can be repositioned for different tasks.

  • Self-Adjusting Guards – Automatically adjust to the material being processed.

2. Belt & Pulley Guards

• Purpose: Cover belts and pulleys to prevent entanglement or contact.

• Common in: Motors, conveyor systems, compressors.

3. Fan Guards (Variations)

• Wire Mesh Guards – Lightweight and allow airflow; common for smaller fans.

• Inlet/Outlet Guards – Placed on the intake or exhaust side of fans to prevent foreign objects from entering or exiting.

4. Motor Guards

• Purpose: Shield motors from external impact, dust, and moisture.

• Includes: Enclosures, hoods, or cages.

5. Ventilation Grilles

• Purpose: Allow airflow while preventing contact with internal components.

• Common in: HVAC systems, electronics, server racks.

6. Finger Guards / Safety Screens

• Purpose: Specifically designed to prevent finger access to hazardous areas.

• Applications: Often used on small machinery or portable tools.
