Ashby School student learns to TIG weld
Harrison spent the day with us on Monday 26th January, working alongside our fabrication apprentice, Lewis Bithell.
During his time on site, he was introduced to TIG welding, focusing on aluminium, and had the opportunity to get involved and try it for himself.
It’s always great to support young people taking an interest in engineering and manufacturing, and Harrison showed a real willingness to learn and get stuck in.
A big thank you to Lewis for supporting him throughout the day, and we wish Harrison all the best with his project and future studies.

What is TIG welding?
🔹 TIG Welding (Tungsten Inert Gas)
- Uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode
- Filler rod is added manually (like gas welding)
- Shielding gas (usually pure argon) protects the weld
- Requires two hands + foot pedal (often)
- Often used on specialist metals such as titanium, stainless steel, aluminium, but also mild steel
👉 Think of it as precise and controlled
🔹 MIG Welding (Metal Inert Gas)
- Uses a consumable wire electrode that feeds automatically
- Wire acts as both electrode + filler
- Shielding gas protects the weld, usually a 75% Argon and 25% CO2 mix
- Usually one-handed operation
👉 Think of it as fast and easy
