Significant new Babcock Wanson Group factory to lead the field in decarbonised process heating

11th January 2024

The Babcock Wanson Group, of which industrial process heating equipment and solutions specialist Babcock Wanson UK is a founding company, has announced the building of a substantial new plant in Nérac, France.  Covering 80,000m2, the new plant will enable the Group to increase overall production capacity to meet increased demand, specifically its decarbonisation solutions in which the Group is a leading player.

The Babcock Wanson Group has expanded rapidly over recent years and now includes six brands which are present in eleven countries: Babcock Wanson, PBS Power Equipment, Parat, Donau Carbon Technologies, Standard Fasel, Reputabel Warmtetechniek, MAES, Thermigas and Steam Plant Engineering.  There are five key production plants, including the existing factory at Nérac.  Rather than alter this existing building, the decision was made to design and build a new state of the art plant in the same location, with the capacity to meet existing and predicted growth in equipment sales that has resulted from the Group’s expansion.  The new plant will also be able to readily accommodate the manufacture of larger product.

In addition to increasing the production capacity, this new industrial site will provide the Babcock Wanson Group with the ability to respond to the growing demands for decarbonised solutions through the development and expansion of electric and electrode boilers, oxy-combustion, and hydrogen-designed boilers.  The investment in the plant, according to Babcock Wanson Group, underlines its strong commitment to being a leader in the field of energy transition.

The first development phase of the new plant is scheduled to be completed towards the end of 2026 and will meet the most demanding environmental construction standards, including the use of voltaic panels on roofs and geothermal energy for heating.  The second phase, will see all Babcock Wanson France’s production activities be moved to this one site, thereby offering optimal working conditions for all the manufacturing, research, and operating teams.

Commenting on what this exciting new development means for Babcock Wanson in the UK, Babcock Wanson UK Managing Director David Hatswell said: “Babcock Wanson is renown for the quality of its products – both design and manufacture – and engineering expertise.  Being part of the Babcock Wanson Group has provided us and our clients with significant added resources and access to a far wider range of process heating solutions than ever before.  The new factory in France will ensure we meet the demand for these products and, just as importantly, will be a hub for our incredibly talented engineers and product managers working on innovative, new low carbon solutions.”
