Silverstone Karting Facility Nears Green Light
Plans for the creation of a karting facility at Silverstone could soon accelerate after being recommended for approval.
The British Racing Drivers’ Club and Silverstone Circuits Ltd are proposing a scheme in the centre of Silverstone Circuit.
The application site is covered in hardstanding and grass and is utilised during events for the Formula 1 Fan Zone, Classics Fan Zone and other temporary structures; it houses the old historic track, which will be reutilised as part of the karting facilities.
Lined up is a karting facility with an FIA-rated track of 1,404 meters, which can be subdivided and split into three/four circuits.
A two-storey building would provide briefing areas, race control, support and spectator facilities at the entrance to the site, while a single-storey structure would provide the scrutineering area.
In addition to the karting track, the application also seeks permission for the siting of the temporary events stage. This would be located on the eastern part of the circuit on major event days only.
“The proposals for the karting are a long-term wish of the circuit to provide facilities for young drivers and to support the motorsport industry for the future,” a statement from the applicants said.
“It is a key leisure-related facility and is one of the key areas identified in the masterplan as providing family entertainment and multi-purpose leisure activities. It is wholly in support of the motorsport values for the circuit.”
West Northamptonshire Council’s south planning committee will review the proposals on 6 July.
A report for the committee said: “The development will be seen in conjunction with the existing buildings within the Silverstone Circuit site, and the design and appearance of the buildings are appropriate in their context, reflective of their surroundings and fit for purpose.”
Members have been recommended to approve the scheme.
Also appearing on the agenda is a neighbouring authority re-consultation with Buckinghamshire Council, for which no objection is recommended.
